Chronology

This repertory began in 1932 and developed up until the end of his career in 1976, some 43 years, even if his actual debut took place on December 31, 1940 in Madame Butterfly still accounting for a full career spanning 35 years.I have divided this splendid career into three significant phases:Initial Phase: From 1932 to 1945, the period not documented by recordings, but very important in his growth as an artist, comprising some 235 performances, including repeat performances.Post-War Phase: From 1946 to 1963 the year of the terrible automobile accident which marks the most intense period with 1,149 performances, including repeat performances.Post-Accident Phase: From 1964 to 1975, 205 performances, including repeat performances.Concerts: Totaling, moreover, 113 concerts performed in the arc of the same career, among which were many benefit performances. If one totals up these numbers, one arrives at the amazing figure of 1,589 performances, which when added to his concerts brings the number to 1,702 appearences, which clearly demonstrates the passion and great zeal that Mario Del Monaco dedicated to the world of Music, through his love of this great art and for his public, which thanks to his interpretations, discovered new meanings and nuances which had remained hidden because they were not explored by others of his colleagues.

Note: The number of performances cited above, one must understand, is not an absolute number, but an approximation, given that, in consideration of the intense activity sustained over his lengthy career, it is not possible to ascertain the exact number of performances, which might actually result in a greater number, in fact, some estimates mention as many as 2,000 performances.
